Popeye's chief adversary is a character known by two names, Bluto and Brutus.
Bluto, also referred to as Brutus in some episodes, is a recurring antagonist in the Popeye cartoons and comic strips. He is often portrayed as a burly, bearded, and muscular sailor who constantly tries to steal Popeye's love interest, Olive Oyl.
Initially, the character was introduced as Bluto in the 1932 Popeye cartoon "The Crystal Brawl." Bluto quickly gained popularity as Popeye's arch-nemesis, engaging in fierce battles with him over Olive's affection. However, due to legal issues, the name Bluto couldn't be used, so the character was renamed Brutus in the 1960s. Despite the name change, the character's appearance and personality remained largely the same.
Bluto/Brutus is known for his cunning and relentless pursuit of Olive Oyl. He often engages in mischief and chaos to sabotage Popeye's chances with her. Whether by cheating in athletic competitions or using brute force, Bluto/Brutus continuously tries to undermine Popeye's relationship with Olive.
Bluto/Brutus is often depicted as physically imposing, towering over other characters and using his strength to intimidate and overpower them. However, Popeye's secret weapon, a can of spinach, gives him superhuman strength, allowing him to defeat Bluto/Brutus and protect Olive Oyl.
Throughout the years, Bluto/Brutus has become an iconic character in the Popeye franchise. His rivalry with Popeye and ongoing pursuit of Olive Oyl have provided endless entertainment for fans of the series. Bluto/Brutus's dual names have added to the character's mystique and contributed to the enduring popularity of Popeye's chief adversary.
