George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were last seen alive on June 8, 1924, during their ill-fated attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The two British mountaineers were part of the 1924 British Everest Expedition led by General Charles Granville Bruce. Their ultimate goal was to be the first climbers to successfully reach the summit of the world's highest mountain.
On that fateful day, Mallory and Irvine were spotted by fellow expedition member Noel Odell, who saw them "going strong for the top." This led to much speculation and debate over the years about whether Mallory and Irvine actually reached the summit before disappearing. Their disappearance has become one of the greatest mysteries in mountaineering history, with many theories and expeditions launched in an attempt to uncover the truth.
Despite extensive search efforts over the years, Mallory and Irvine's remains were not discovered until 1999 when an expedition led by American climber Conrad Anker found Mallory's body at 27,000 feet on the north face of the mountain. Irvine's body, however, has yet to be located, leaving the question of whether they reached the summit unresolved.
It is believed that Mallory and Irvine were heading towards the summit of Mount Everest when they were last seen alive. Their determination and bravery in the face of extreme challenges have inspired generations of mountaineers and adventurers to push the boundaries of what is possible.
