Joan of Arc, also known as Jeanne d'Arc, was a French heroine who played a significant role during the Hundred Years' War. She was born in the year 1412 in Domrémy, France. Joan claimed to have received divine visions and heard the voices of saints, instructing her to support the Dauphin, Charles VII, in his quest to become the rightful King of France.
At the age of just 17, Joan of Arc convinced Charles VII to allow her to lead an army against the English forces that were occupying parts of France. The young warrior maiden achieved several remarkable military victories, including the lifting of the siege of Orléans, which had lasted for months.
However, Joan's military triumphs did not last long. In May 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians, who were allies of the English. The Burgundians sold her to the English, who put her on trial for charges of heresy and witchcraft.
It was in the year 1431 when Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. On May 30th, she was led to the marketplace in Rouen, France, where she was publicly executed. Despite her young age and lack of formal education, Joan of Arc displayed remarkable bravery and resilience until the very end.
Joan's trial and execution were politically motivated, as the English and their allies sought to discredit her and undermine the legitimacy of Charles VII's claim to the throne. However, Joan's martyrdom only served to further strengthen her legacy and inspire countless generations to come.
It was not until many years later, in 1456, that Joan's conviction and execution were overturned by the Catholic Church. She was declared innocent and canonized as a saint in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.
Today, Joan of Arc is revered as a national symbol of France and a symbol of courage and determination. Her story continues to captivate and inspire people around the world, making her one of the most iconic figures in history.
