When it comes to breaking barriers and shattering glass ceilings, women have played a pivotal role in history. One such remarkable woman was Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who made history by becoming the first woman to be elected as the head of a European democracy.

Born on April 17, 1916, in Sri Lanka, Sirimavo Bandaranaike was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. In July 1960, she led the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to victory in the general elections, becoming the Prime Minister of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). This historic achievement not only made her the first woman to hold such a position in Sri Lanka but also in any European democracy.

Bandaranaike's political career was deeply influenced by her husband, Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike, who served as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka until his assassination in 1959. Following his death, Sirimavo Bandaranaike took over the leadership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and became the driving force behind its political success.

During her tenure as Prime Minister, Bandaranaike implemented numerous progressive policies. She focused on social welfare, education, healthcare, and the empowerment of women. Bandaranaike also emphasized non-alignment and strengthened Sri Lanka's relations with other countries, particularly within the Commonwealth.

Bandaranaike's political achievements were not limited to her time in office. She continued to be an influential figure even after leaving the Prime Minister's post. In 1994, she once again assumed office as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, making her the world's first woman to hold this position twice.
