Retreatism involves rejecting both societal goals and legitimate means, often leading individuals to withdraw from society. Rebellion involves rejecting societal goals and means and seeking to replace them with new goals and means through revolutionary action.

Individuals who experience strain may be more likely to engage in criminal behavior as a way to cope with their feelings of frustration and alienation. This can manifest in various forms such as theft, drug trafficking, vandalism, or violent crime. Strain theory suggests that crime is not just a result of individual pathology or moral failing, but rather a response to social and economic conditions that create strain and pressure on individuals to succeed.

By understanding the root causes of crime through strain theory, society can work to address the underlying issues that drive individuals to criminal behavior. This can involve implementing policies and programs that reduce inequality, provide greater access to opportunity, and promote social inclusion.
