After her relationship with Julius Caesar ended, Cleopatra set her sights on another powerful Roman leader - Mark Antony. Cleopatra knew that aligning herself with Antony would not only secure her position as the ruler of Egypt but also provide her with the opportunity to further expand her influence in the Roman world.
Mark Antony was a key figure in the Roman political landscape, serving as one of the three rulers of the Roman Republic alongside Octavian (later known as Emperor Augustus) and Lepidus. Cleopatra recognized the importance of forming an alliance with Antony in order to protect her kingdom from outside threats and maintain her grip on power.
Legend has it that Cleopatra first met Mark Antony in 41 BC when she sailed to Tarsus in a magnificent barge adorned with gold and purple sails. Antony was instantly captivated by Cleopatra's beauty and intelligence, and the two quickly formed a passionate relationship that would have far-reaching consequences for both of their empires.
Together, Cleopatra and Mark Antony embarked on a grand tour of the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, solidifying their alliance and further cementing their bond. Cleopatra bore Antony three children, further tying their fates together and solidifying their dynastic ambitions.
However, their relationship would ultimately lead to their downfall. In 31 BC, Octavian declared war on Cleopatra and Antony, leading to the famous Battle of Actium. The combined forces of Octavian decisively defeated Antony and Cleopatra's fleet, forcing them to flee to Egypt.
Realizing that all was lost, Cleopatra famously took her own life rather than be paraded through the streets of Rome as a captive. Mark Antony followed suit, choosing to die by his own hand rather than face the humiliation of defeat.
In the end, Cleopatra's love affairs with both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony would go down in history as some of the most famous and tragic romances of all time, immortalizing her as one of the most iconic figures of the ancient world.
