Alcohol prohibition in the United States was enacted through the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and lasted from 1920 to 1933. This period, known as the Prohibition era, was a time when the production, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages were banned in the country.
During this time, the consumption of alcohol was still legal, and individuals were allowed to possess and consume alcohol in their homes. However, the commercial production and distribution of alcohol were strictly prohibited. This led to the rise of illegal speakeasies and bootleggers who smuggled alcohol into the country and sold it on the black market.
