Ursa Major: The Great Bear in Greek Mythology

In Greek mythology, Zeus placed the nymph Callisto in the heavens as the constellation Ursa Major, also known as the Great Bear. Callisto was a follower of the goddess Artemis and was known for her beauty. However, she caught the eye of Zeus, who disguised himself as Artemis to seduce her. As a result of this encounter, Callisto became pregnant.

When Artemis discovered Callisto's pregnancy, she was furious and banished her from her sight. Zeus, feeling guilty for his role in Callisto's predicament, transformed her into a bear to protect her from Artemis's wrath. Callisto roamed the forests as a bear for many years, until one day she encountered her son, Arcas. Not recognizing his mother in her new form, Arcas attempted to kill the bear. In a moment of mercy, Zeus intervened and placed both Callisto and Arcas in the heavens as the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, respectively.

It is often referred to as the Great Bear and is known for its distinctive shape, which resembles a large ladle or saucepan.
