Oedipus married his mother - who was she?

In Greek mythology, Oedipus married his mother, Jocasta. Jocasta was the Queen of Thebes and the wife of King Laius. When Oedipus was born, an oracle prophesied that he would one day kill his father and marry his mother. In an attempt to avoid this fate, Laius and Jocasta abandoned Oedipus as a baby. However, Oedipus was later adopted by the King and Queen of Corinth and raised as their own son.

As Oedipus grew older, he learned of the prophecy and set out to discover the truth about his parentage. During his journey, Oedipus unknowingly killed his real father, Laius, in a chance encounter on the road to Thebes. He then went on to solve the riddle of the Sphinx, saving the city of Thebes from destruction and earning the hand of Jocasta in marriage.

It was only later that Oedipus learned the horrifying truth - that he had fulfilled the prophecy by killing his father and marrying his mother. When Jocasta realized the truth as well, she took her own life in despair, leaving Oedipus to suffer the consequences of his actions.

The story of Oedipus and Jocasta is a tragic tale of fate and destiny, showcasing the power of prophecy and the inability of mortals to escape their predetermined paths. Despite their best efforts to avoid the prophecy, Oedipus and Jocasta were ultimately unable to change the course of their lives.

Today, the story of Oedipus and Jocasta continues to captivate audiences around the world, serving as a cautionary tale about the dangers of trying to outwit fate. The tragic love affair between mother and son serves as a reminder that some things are simply meant to be, no matter how hard we try to fight against them.
