What is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease?

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is a rare and fatal brain disorder that is often referred to as the human form of 'Mad Cow's Disease'. It is a degenerative neurological condition that affects the brain and nervous system, causing rapid mental deterioration and physical decline.

CJD is caused by the abnormal accumulation of prion proteins in the brain, which leads to the formation of lesions and ultimately, the death of brain cells. These prions are believed to be misfolded proteins that can infect healthy proteins and cause them to misfold as well, leading to a chain reaction of damage in the brain.

Symptoms of CJD typically include rapidly progressive dementia, muscle stiffness, jerky movements, and difficulty with coordination and balance. As the disease progresses, patients may also experience hallucinations, blindness, and coma. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for CJD, and the disease is always fatal.
