When the Allies landed in Sicily during World War II, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was forced to make a difficult decision. As the Allied forces began their invasion of the island in July 1943, Mussolini faced mounting pressure from within his own government and military to take action.

Realizing that the situation was becoming increasingly dire, Mussolini was ultimately forced to resign as Prime Minister on July 25, 1943. This marked the beginning of the end for his fascist regime, as his leadership was increasingly questioned and undermined by his own supporters.

After his resignation, Mussolini was arrested and imprisoned by King Victor Emmanuel III. The King then appointed a new government led by Marshal Pietro Badoglio, who immediately began negotiations with the Allies for an armistice.

On September 3, 1943, Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, effectively ending its participation in the war on the side of the Axis powers. This decision was a major turning point in the war, as it opened up a new front in Europe and weakened the Axis forces.

Following the signing of the armistice, Mussolini was rescued from prison by German commandos in a daring raid. He was then reinstated as the head of a puppet government in northern Italy, known as the Italian Social Republic. However, his power and influence were greatly diminished, and he was ultimately captured and executed by Italian partisans in April 1945.

Overall, Mussolini's forced resignation and the signing of the armistice with the Allies in Sicily were significant events that marked the beginning of the end for the fascist regime in Italy. It also had a major impact on the course of World War II, as it weakened the Axis powers and ultimately led to their defeat.
