Originally called the "I-Scream Bar," the iconic frozen treat we now know as Eskimo Pie has a rich history dating back to the early 1920s. Christian Kent Nelson, a candy store owner from Iowa, is credited with inventing this beloved dessert.
Nelson came up with the idea for the Eskimo Pie after a young boy couldn't decide between purchasing a chocolate bar or a scoop of ice cream. Inspired by this dilemma, Nelson sought to create a convenient and delicious treat that combined the best of both worlds. Thus, the I-Scream Bar was born.
However, it wasn't until 1921 that Nelson partnered with Russell Stover, a fellow confectioner, to mass-produce and distribute the I-Scream Bar. Together, they rebranded the treat as Eskimo Pie, a name that would eventually become synonymous with frozen desserts.
Despite its initial success, Eskimo Pie faced controversy in recent years due to its racially insensitive name. In response to growing criticism, the brand announced plans to rebrand as "Edy's Pie" in 2020, in recognition of its founder Joseph Edy.
Today, Eskimo Pie remains a popular choice for those seeking a nostalgic and delicious frozen treat. Whether enjoyed on a hot summer day or as a sweet indulgence, this classic dessert continues to bring joy to ice cream lovers of all ages.
