Richard the Lionheart, also known as King Richard I of England, married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191. Berengaria never set foot on English soil during their marriage, as Richard spent much of his reign away on Crusade or fighting in France.

Berengaria was the daughter of King Sancho VI of Navarre and Sancha of Castile. She was renowned for her beauty and intelligence, making her a desirable match for the King of England. Despite never living together in England, their marriage was seen as politically advantageous for both kingdoms.
