Which King was the intended target of the Gunpowder Plot?

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed assassination attempt on King James I of England and VI of Scotland, along with members of his Parliament, on November 5, 1605. The conspirators, led by Guy Fawkes, planned to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament, in what became known as the Gunpowder Plot.

King James I was the intended target of the plot, which was hatched by a group of Catholic extremists who were unhappy with the King's treatment of Catholics in England. The conspirators believed that by assassinating the King and members of Parliament, they could bring about a Catholic uprising and overthrow the Protestant government.

The plot was uncovered when one of the conspirators, who had reservations about the plan, sent an anonymous letter to a member of Parliament warning him to stay away from the State Opening. The authorities investigated and found Guy Fawkes guarding the barrels of gunpowder hidden in the cellars beneath the House of Lords.

As a result of the failed plot, the conspirators were captured, tried, and executed. Guy Fawkes himself was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered for his role in the plot. To this day, the Gunpowder Plot is commemorated on November 5th with bonfires and fireworks displays across the United Kingdom.
