Who Founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1948?

The Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, was founded in 1948 by Mother Teresa. Born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, Mother Teresa dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor. In 1928, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and took on the name Sister Mary Teresa. After teaching for 17 years in a convent school in Kolkata, India, she felt a calling from God to work among the poor and abandoned.

With permission from the Vatican and the Archbishop of Kolkata, Mother Teresa left the Loreto order in 1948 and started her own congregation, the Missionaries of Charity. The primary mission of the congregation was to care for those who were dying in the streets of Kolkata. Mother Teresa and her sisters provided love, compassion, and care to the sick, the destitute, and the dying, regardless of their religion or social status.

Today, the Missionaries of Charity have over 4,500 sisters and are active in 133 countries. They run orphanages, schools, dispensaries, and mobile clinics to provide care and support to those in need. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work and her dedication to serving the poorest of the poor.
