In Japan between 1192 and 1868, the rulers were known as Shoguns. The title of Shogun was given to the military dictators who held the real power in Japan during this period. The Shoguns were appointed by the Emperor but actually controlled the government and ruled the country.

The first Shogun was Minamoto no Yoritomo, who was appointed by the Emperor in 1192. Yoritomo established the Kamakura Shogunate, which lasted until 1333. The most famous Shogunate in Japanese history was the Tokugawa Shogunate, which was established by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603 and lasted until 1868. During the Tokugawa Shogunate, Japan was ruled by a series of Tokugawa Shoguns who brought about a period of peace and stability in the country.

The Shoguns were able to maintain control over Japan by establishing a system of feudalism, in which they granted land and power to regional lords known as Daimyo. The Daimyo in turn controlled samurai warriors who served them in exchange for land and protection. This system of feudalism helped to keep the country stable and prevent uprisings against the Shogunate.

Despite their power, the Shoguns were still technically subordinate to the Emperor, who was considered the divine ruler of Japan. However, in reality, the Emperor was more of a figurehead with no real political power. The Shoguns were the ones who actually governed the country and made decisions on behalf of the government.

Overall, the period of Shogun rule in Japan between 1192 and 1868 was a time of great political and social change. The Shoguns were able to establish a strong central government and maintain control over the country through their system of feudalism. The legacy of the Shoguns continues to be felt in Japan today, with many aspects of their rule still influencing the country's government and culture.
