After the death of Leonid Brezhnev in 1982, he was succeeded as President of the USSR by Yuri Andropov. Andropov was a former head of the KGB and had been serving as the Chairman of the KGB at the time of Brezhnev's death. His time as President was short-lived, however, as he passed away in 1984 after only 15 months in office. Following Andropov's death, he was replaced by Konstantin Chernenko, who had been a close ally of Brezhnev. Chernenko's tenure as President was also brief, lasting only 13 months before he died in 1985. It was during Chernenko's time in office that Mikhail Gorbachev was selected as General Secretary of the Communist Party, marking the beginning of a new era in Soviet politics. Gorbachev's rise to power signaled a shift towards reform and openness in the Soviet Union, known as perestroika and glasnost. These policies aimed to modernize the Soviet economy and political system, as well as make the government more transparent and accountable to the people. Under Gorbachev's leadership, the USSR experienced significant changes, including the loosening of censorship, the release of political prisoners, and the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. However, these reforms also led to increased political unrest and economic instability, eventually culminating in the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Overall, the succession of leaders following Brezhnev's death marked a period of significant upheaval and change in the Soviet Union. From Andropov to Chernenko to Gorbachev, each leader brought their own vision and policies to the table, ultimately shaping the future of the country and its eventual collapse.
