Tanganyika and Zanzibar, two distinct regions in East Africa, merged to form a single country known as Tanzania. This historic union took place on April 26, 1964, and marked a significant milestone in the region's history.

Tanganyika, situated on the eastern coast of Africa, was a former colony under British rule. It gained independence on December 9, 1961, becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve such a feat. Zanzibar, on the other hand, was an archipelago located just off the coast of Tanzania, comprising several islands, including Unguja and Pemba. It too had a complex history, having been ruled by Arab sultanates and later by the British.

The decision to unite these two regions was driven by the desire to create a stronger and more stable nation. The union was formalized through an agreement known as the Articles of Union, which established the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, later renamed as the United Republic of Tanzania. Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanganyika, became the President of the newly formed country.
