During World War II, the German rocket centre was located in the Baltic seaport of Peenemünde. This secret military facility played a crucial role in the development of V-2 rockets, which were used by the German military to attack Allied targets.
The Peenemünde rocket centre was established in 1937 and led by renowned scientist Wernher von Braun. Under his leadership, the facility developed the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile, the V-2 rocket. These powerful weapons were capable of reaching targets over 200 miles away, making them a significant threat to Allied forces.
Throughout the war, the German rocket centre at Peenemünde was a top priority target for Allied bombing raids. In August 1943, the Royal Air Force launched a massive bombing raid on the facility, causing extensive damage and delaying the production of V-2 rockets. Despite this setback, the Germans were able to resume production and continue launching attacks on Allied cities.
After the war, many of the scientists and engineers who worked at the Peenemünde rocket centre were captured by Allied forces and brought to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip. Wernher von Braun, in particular, went on to play a key role in the American space program, including the development of the Saturn V rocket that took astronauts to the moon.
Today, the site of the former German rocket centre at Peenemünde is home to the Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum, which offers visitors a glimpse into the facility's history and the development of the V-2 rocket. The museum features exhibits on the scientists and engineers who worked at the facility, as well as the impact of the V-2 rocket on the course of World War II.
